Brazil

The immediate reaction is that the host nation should take care of business in this group, especially since they wants to erase memories of the failures from 2016’s Copa America Centenario, when the Selecao failed to get out of the group stage. Tite’s Brazil, playing at home, should be too dominant against their opponents and by the time it faces Peru, arguably its toughest opponent, they should already have done enough to get through to the quarterfinals.

Copa America Titles: 8 Key Players: Alisson, Gabriel Jesus, Fernandinho Coach: Tite

Bolivia

The greatest achievement of the Bolivian football team in the COPA America was in 1963 when the tournament was still called the “South American Football Championship”. Bolivia played as hosts of the tournament and emerged as eventual champions, a feat that shook the whole country. However, they are entering into this year’s tournament as one of the underdogs - La Verde have only won a single game in the last 7 Copa Americas, with 8 draws and 13 losses.

Copa America Titles: 1 Key Players: Marcelo Martins Coach: Eduardo Villegas

Venezuela

Venezuela are 1 of the 2 only CONMEBOL teams that have yet to win the Copa America (the other being Ecuador). 1 interesting fact is that Venezuela is the only CONMEBOL side to have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup. In the past, Venezuela have gone through entire tournaments without recording a single win, although this has changed in recent years. They will be aiming to surprise the crowd in this year’s edition of the COPA America with some of the more experienced players that play in the major European leagues.

Copa America Titles: 0 Key Players: Salomon Rondon, Darwin Machis, Tomas Rincon Coach: Eduardo Villegas

Peru

Peru, who qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 36 years and earned admiration for its style of play in Russia, is still evolving under Argentine manager Ricardo Gareca and have many young stars about to enter their prime. They do have some well-known names in the South American football scene – Christian Cueva, Miguel Trauco and not to forget the main star of the team, Paolo Guerrero.

Copa America Titles: 2 Key Players: Paolo Guerrero Coach: Gareca

Argentina

Much of Argentina’s success depends on 5-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi, and if he plays it's all about learning how to utilize him and work the squad around his strengths. Lionel Scaloni, who comes from Argentina’s U-20 setup, is a smart manager who encourages a sense of team cohesion throughout. If anyone can help this team play alongside La Pulga, it could be him. With his vast experience from working with the youth team, he is also the manager that can help this nation move on without Messi.

Copa America Titles: 14 Key Players: Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero Coach: Lionel Scaloni

Columbia

Columbia’s golden generation of footballers has put the national team on the radar of world football once again after some great performances at the 2014 & 2018 FIFA World Cup. Los Cafeteros will be seeking their second COPA America title in this tournament, a feat they achieved 19 years ago at Bogota, where they won as hosts of the tournament.

Copa America Titles: 1 Key Players: James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao, David Ospina Coach: Carlos Queiroz

Paraguay

The Paraguayan team won the tournament twice, in 1953 and 1979. These 2 titles along with the silver medal in the 2004 Olympic Games held in Athens are the greatest achievements of the country. They do boasts some talented players like Angel Romero, Derlis Gonzalez, Alejandro ‘Kaku’ Romero and Newcastle United player Miguel Amiron. Paraguay might surprise and come out strong in Group B.

Copa America Titles: 2 Key Players: Miguel Almiron, Oscar Romero, Derlis Gonzalez Coach: Eduardo Berizzo

Qatar

The recently crowned champions of the Asian Cup are entering the tournament as guests. This will be their debut in the Copa America. Qatar is the 9th team outside of CONMEBOL to compete in this tournament and will be the second Asian team to take part in Copa America (Japan had participated in 1999 and will also be present in this year’s tournament). Striker Almoez Ali, who scored 9 goals in the Asian Cup, will be looking emulate his results in the Asian Cup in this tournament and bring his team to new heights.

Copa America Titles: 0 Key Players: Almoez Ali Coach: Félix Sánchez Blás

Uruguay

Uruguay, the tournament’s most successful nation with 15 all-time titles, returns with the same philosophy that makes them so dangerous. Under Tabarez, it’s difficult to bet against La Celeste winning this group. This is not just about Luis Suarez or Edinson Cavani anymore. From Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira to Juventus’s Rodrigo Bentancur, Uruguay will bring its usual pressure and physical attributes combined with youthful exuberance into the tournament.

Copa America Titles: 15 Key Players: Luis Suarez, Lucas Torreira, Edinson Cavani Coach: Óscar Tabárez

Ecuador

The Ecuador football team will be looking for their first Copa America title in Brazil. Along with Venezuela, Ecuador has yet to win this continental title. They managed to reach the finals in 1997, unbeaten with 2 wins and 2 draws but were ultimately eliminated in the end on penalties by Mexico. Ecuador has shown some potential in the last 2 decades, qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in 2002, 2006 and 2014.

Copa America Titles: 0 Key Players: Antonio Valencia, Enner Valencia Coach: Hernan Dario Gomez

Japan

Japan was one of the top surprises at the World Cup and pushed Belgium to the brink in the last 16. The Japan football team is one of the best in Asia, with 4 titles achieved in their continent. Their current squad consists of experienced players competing in major European competitions, so we expect them to finish strong in Group C.

Copa America Titles: 0 Key Players: Shinji Okazaki Coach: Hajime Moriyasu

Chile

La Roja are the current defending champions of the Copa America. They have won the last two tournaments but surprisingly did not qualify for Russia 2018. The Chilean team will be looking to claim their 3rd title in a row and with a talented squad including Claudio Bravo, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez, just to name a few, it’s hard to count them out from the tournament.
